Become a Random Intern

Wishing Well by Naomi, age 13
Learn something new.

Make your college application resume look good.

And help others while doing it!

Make every kid count toward hurricane relief.

Imagine the power of uniting your fellow K-12 students across the USA for hurricane relief.

Each car wash and bake sale… when added together, will rival the giving power of major corporations!

RandomKid is a nonprofit organization based in Waukee, IA. It is our mission to help kids help others. Our nonprofit organization launched on 12/01/05 during a historic conference call with kids from all over the USA participating to learn just how much they had raised for various hurricane relief related charities (such as the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, UNICEF, and more). In just three months, schools and individual children collectively raised over $5 Million Dollars! But not even half of the country has been counted yet!

On the one-year anniversary that Katrina hit our nation, August 29, 2006, RandomKid will hold another national conference call to celebrate the power of children helping others and to inspire them to continue to help.

Title: Hurricane Tally Intern

Job Description and related learning experience.

  • Identify all the school districts within your calling area (or as many as you think you can handle--not long distance). Learn how to harness the internet to maximize your efficiency in research.
  • Work with RandomKid to set a realistic goal of how much you think those districts will report. Learn how to extrapolate figures by using current data available, such as what similar districts have done, and/or information from research pulled from news articles and more.
  • Email names, titles, contact numbers of school officials to RandomKid Headquarters, so that we may authenticate reported numbers, and also authenticate to them that you are working for us in this capacity. Refine your organization skills and how to keep your data in an organized, reportable manner.
  • Starting with school district offices, try to gather the information on what all the schools in their district have already raised for hurricane relief. Develop your "sales" skills. If you can't get the answer from someone there, where do you go next? How do you get the answers you need? RandomKid will help you identify how to get to the decision makers and the people who will help give accurate information tally the numbers.
  • RandomReporter--(OPTIONAL)-- For those who want to be journalists or improve their writing skills, or just plain want to be a big part of this effort: Gather stories from some of the schools that you talk to. If a school reports a HUGE number, ask them how they made so much. Or find out if they had any unusual ways of raising the money. We may include your stories in newsletters, on our website, or perhaps on our next national conference call!

Please email intern@randomkid.org for job requirements and an application.
