RandomKids around the world have lots of things going on. Below are some examples of projects that are super easy to do, and you can start today!

All of these were started by kids who registered with us, wanting to help someone else.  Even if you're not sure who you want to help, or how please register with RandomKid, and we'll email you with new project ideas, or to help you come up with your very own project!

HELP SOLVE THE WORLD'S WATER CRISIS

email water@randomkid.org if you are intersted in joining us.

Why: 1.5 million children die every year, under age five, due to unsafe drinking water. That's one every 8 seconds. Join kids and schools across the USA who are working together to address this problem.

HOW: Develop Your OWN Bottled Water Product with Proceeds Supporting Technologies that Bring Safe Water to the World. RandomKid will develop the product with you, supply your bottles & templates (no charge), and safely set-up communication networks between participating schools and youth groups as desired.

Feel good factor: The technologies we are supporting provide direct aid. You can choose where you help, who you help, and how you help.  We have projects in Africa, Asia, and South & Central America. You can also interact with kids and schools across the USA who share your goals, and pool your money together.

HOLIDAY PROJECT: CREATE TOY  LIBRARIES FOR ORPHANAGES

email orphans@randomkid.org if you are interested in joining us

Why? There are 200 million orphans in the world, of which only a tiny fraction will ever be adopted. The rule of thumb is that a child loses one month of developmental skills for every three months they spend in an institution. We have to make their lives work where they are.

HOW: Create a HUGE garage sale (probably in your place of worship or school) of gently used toys that you collect from neighbors, classmates and friends.  All proceeds will go to fund toy libraries for orphans, and all leftover toys will be given to less privileged youth in your community.

Feel good factor:

A. It teaches the kids (you) how to set up a business

B. People in your community, hit hard by the economy, can purchase gifts for others for a price they can afford-- for Christmas, Chanukah, etc.

 C. It is environmentally friendly-- recycling used toys for others

D. All funds generated fill toy libraries for orphanages so kids can have OT, PT, Language Pathology, and play time.

E. Unsold toys will be given to less privileged youth in your community.

PRODUCE FOOD FOR THE HOMELESS

Email gardens@randomkid.org for more information.

Why?  There are 750,000 homeless people in the USA, living in every commuity, including yours.  Charity begins where your heart is-- why not start in your own backyard?

HOW: Plant vegetables (all seedlings MAY be provided for no charge--contact us for details) with your classmates or other youth.  After you grow your produce, you can give it all away to a local homeless shelter.   Started by a 10 year-old, see how Katie Stagliano and her 4th grade class fed 300 hungry people for inspiration!  Click here.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

See OPDVD KIDS for more info.

Why: Because our soldiers can’t play regular outdoor sports safely during their free time.  By providing DVD’s, we are giving them safe recreation, and a taste of home.

HOW: Collect DVDs to Send Over Seas (we will provide boxes and shipping)

Feel good factor: Super easy to make impact fast. No money collection involved. Patriotic.

JOIN A YOUTH-DELEGATED UNITED NATIONS

Why: Because kids, like you, from around the world, deserve to have a voice in issues that affect the world (after all, the world will be ours one day).

HOW: Email us about your interest at UN@randomkid.org. You must represent a state or a country that we do not have a delegate for.  You will be issuing statements to the national and international media, passing resolutions, sending in peace-keeping "forces" and developing world policy.  Ages: 10-17

Feel good factor: This is not a mock-U.N. This is a group of kids from all over the world who will become an international VOICE for the children of the world.

TEACH THE WORLD HOW TO LIVE GREEN

Email green@randomkid.org for more information

Why: By 2030, there will be no glaciers left , and 400,000 square miles of the Arctic sea will have melted. By 2050, we will have wiped out up to 37% of all plant and animal species.  We can change this.

HOW:  You can create how-to/why-to videos posted together in the largest (that's the plan) video library for people learning what they can do to live greener.

Feel Good factor:  You can lead the culture of change toward greener and more sustainable living practices. Work with other youth leaders and kids around the country.

CREATE A LIVING MEMORIAL TO AMERICAN VETERANS OF WAR

Email memorial@randomkid.org for more info.

Why: Because there is no national memorial on the national mall in Washington, D.C., only a memorial for residents of that area. More Americans were killed in this war than any other.  This one is about celebrating/recognizing/appreciating our basic rights and freedoms.

HOW: Honor American WWI vets by creating a living historical memorial. Participants will interview families of WWI veterans in their community, and retell their stories in a video library on the RandomKid website. You get to make the video, too.

Feel good factor:

Culminates in a docent tour, led by you/your school/your team/your youth group, of the last living WWI vets, photographed by David DeJonge.  The exhibit comes to you for your community. At the exhibit, you will also share your videos.  You can extend this project by helping to create legislation to provide a WWI national memorial on the national mall. Learn more here by reading about Creekwood Middle School in Humble, TX, who started this project

REBUILD THE GULF

Email rebuild@randomkid.org if you’re interested in joining us.

Why: 3 years later, 45,000 people still live in 240 square foot trailers, usually with 3 people to a trailer.

HOW: Sell Collectible House-shaped Aluminum Key Chains (Backpack accessories) designed by kids.

Check out our “Decorate Your Governor Contest”  from a few yeats ago. Join our task force to develop new ideas.

Feel good factor:   Carabiners are only $3. Not only are you helping fellow Americans, but you will also be joining kids around the country.

PROVIDE EDUCATION TO THOSE WITHOUT

Click on For Each Other to see the webpage from one RandomKid group who completed a school in the summer of 2007.

Email schools@randomkid.org if you want to engage a group to build a school.

Why: 72 million children in the world are unable to go to school because of poverty and war. Without education, these children have no way to escape from their cycle of poverty.

HOW: Raise Funds to Build a School in Rural Cambodia or Burma by selling bookcovers and book bags that you design the cover art for. (We provide everything you need.)

Feel good factor:  The Asian Bank will match our funds, enabling you to build a school to educate 200-400 kids. Best part: THE KIDS GET TO NAME THE SCHOOL!

FIGHT CANCER IN CHILDREN

Email packthepresent@randomkid.org if you’re interested in joining us.

Why: Thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and this project raises funds for research, in order to increase survival rates, and financially supports families with children who are ill.

HOW: Throw a party where everyone packs a present filled with donations and prayers, or pack an extra present for others at your birthday and holiday celebrations.

Feel good factor: Based on a wildly successful “Stuff the Stocking ” campaign in 2006, this project is easy to do. Plus, packing an extra present serves as a reminder of our many blessings, and adds to the holiday spirit of giving. 45% of the proceeds can be designated to any family in your area needing financial support while helping an ill child, with the remainder going to cancer research and project administration costs.

HELP ANIMALS FIND HOMES

Email pets@randomkid.org if you’re interested in joining us.

Why: Shelters across the USA are flooded with animals needing homes who run the risk of being destroyed when housing is not found. Our “Dog Not Lost” campaign includes ways to get your friends, community, and the media involved in making a difference.

HOW: Hang Creative Signs that you Design,  Engaging a Clever Media Campaign

Feel good factor: You are saving the lives of animals through a fun campaign. Possible signs include a photo of a dog needing a home, with these words below the photo: "DOG NOT LOST", and these words below that: "But he could sure use a home." We have a slew a great slogans.

SUPPORT KIDS WHO ARE HOSPITALIZED, HOMELESS OR HUNGRY

For more info, email shopnshare@randomkid.org

Why: Many thousands of kids in the USA suffer from illnesses, homelessness and hunger.

HOW: Throw a party for your friends to support children hospitalized in your area, your local food pantries or shelters.  Your guests can select gifts from various charities' wishlists to donate to the charity of your choice.

Feel good factor: You can throw a fabulous party more than just on your birthday! Your parties will be all about FUN, FRIENDS, and HELPING others.

MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR ANOTHER KID TO WALK

Email GreatStrides@randomkid.org if you’re interested in joining us.

Why: 1.3 million children around the world are unable to walk due to a correctible condition known as “Club Foot”.  Because surgery is too expensive, a doctor at the University of Iowa came up with an inexpensive way to fix the condition using a series of 5 leg castings over a 3-week period.

HOW: You will walk so another can walk.  You will carry a pedometer that we will provide for you, and you will get people to pledge money for every mile you walk or run. Your goal? To walk a marathon—26.2 miles, or 42 kilometers over any amount of time (not all at once).

(Note: SCHOOLS are having their students carry the pedometers during their mid-day recess, and are using this opportunity to build fitness by inspiring kids to MOVE! The final lap of the marathon can be run in true Olympic style—to cheering crowds on your school’s track and field day, around the school property or at a local relay event. RandomKid provides the pedometers, pledge sheets, all incentives/rewards, and any other supports you need.)

Feel good factor:  YOU can be personally responsible for helping another child be able to walk!!!

PROVIDE NEW HOPE FOR DIABETICS

For more info, click here, or email:  RedAlertDogs@randomkid.org

Why: In the U.S., 300,000 people die each year from diabetes-- more than breast cancer and AIDS combined. Alert dogs can be trained to notify diabetics of dangerous blood-sugar drops well  before finger-pricks regsiter the change.  That interval of time can be the difference between life and death, preventing the onset of ketosis and seizures.

HOW: Start a circle of pet photos around the walls of your school, starting at the office door on one side, and weavng around the school until it ends on the office door on the opposite site.  For students to post photos of their pets (real or imagined), or the pets of others, will cost $3 per photo. Your goal? To complete the loop, providing a child somewhere with their own life-saving alert dog.

Feel good factor: For $800, you can purchase an alert dog for an at-risk diabetic child, and for every adiditonal $25 raised on top of that,  you can have the dog trained. The result? Protecting the life of a child, not to menion removing their constant fear of death.

PROVIDE MOSQUITO NETS TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF MALARIA

For more info, email:

BITEoutMalaria@randomkid.org

Why: 41% of the people on our planet live in areas where malaria is transmitted. Around 400 million people get the disease, and 1 million of them die. Nearly all children.

HOW: One random kid suggested that we have one day per week (or month) where kids can pay $1 dollar to chew gum at school. The money raised will buy mosquito nets to protect sleeping families from the mosquitos who bite them, infecting them with the disease. The slogan? " BITE out Malaria".

Feel good factor: Well, you do get to chew gum for a purpose. That's one way to get your teachers to let you do it (just be sure to have some rules about not putting the gum under desks or in hair).   More than that, mosquito nets save lives. For $10 per net, that's an easy bite to make.
