Random RockStars (and siblings) Tonisha and Tiron helped raise over $25,000 for Brock Elementary in Slidell, LA, and they've only just begun!
In December, 2005 Tonisha and Tiron were all smiles when they moved into their brand new Habitat for Humanity Home in Slidell after Katrina tore their trailer home apart (click here to watch Today Show segment). Wanting to "pay it forward," the siblings teamed up with six other children from across the nation to create a grassroots kids’ national task force to rebuild the gulf.
Tonisha and Tiron are motivated by the constant reminders of last year’s
devastation that still surround them. One year after Katrina came ashore, Tonisha and her classmates are still attending a makeshift school made up of double-wide trailers on another school's campus. One-third of her schoolmates leave their cramped surroundings at the end of each day to return home to yet another trailer--a FEMA trailer.
Working in tandem with their task force, who organize themselves through emails and conference calls, Tonisha and Tiron have a plan.
Tonisha took on the title “Director of Inspiration.” She has been encouraging classmates to share their stories with kids around the nation, so that they know help is still needed. Tiron is sharing his talent as an artist. He created two original works of art to be auctioned off. He’s donating a third of the proceeds to Habitat for Humanity’s Operation Home Delivery, and a third to RandomKid to help kids with future projects to help others.
While most of their efforts are focused on the entire multi-state gulf region that was wiped out by the 2005 hurricane season, the task force decided they wanted to do something for Tonisha's school which was completely destroyed by Katrina. Both Tiron and Tonisha have been actively involved in writing letters to business and community leaders around the nation, drumming up support. On December, 19, 2006, these awesome kids had the pleasure of presenting all that they procured to Brock Elementary School's Principal, Rose Smith. As
200 eager peers eagerly awaited signs of hope, Tonisha and Tiron announced that their task force raised over $25,000 worth of donations for the school and its students.
Lots of things to refurnish the school from uniforms to theatrical supplies came from Target, backpacks and more from Office Depot, and a gift card for each child compliments of Toys "R" Us.
And those were just the stocking-stuffers. The prized gift with the biggest bow under the tree was this: A promise to rebuild the homes, the schools and the playgrounds. Coordinated by the Midwestern contingency of the task force, every child in Tonisha’s school received, in a child-made holiday card, a “carabiner”-- the rope-climbing hooks that mountain climbers use. These carabiners were designed by the task force to be shaped like houses. They come in five colors, and have a different letter on each of the chimneys that together spell out “H” “O” “M” “E” “S”. The net proceeds from the sales of these items will go to Habitat for Humanity to build homes in the gulf, and RandomKid to help kids help others. These children and their carabiners were featured in the December, 2006 issue of Family Circle Magazine. The carabiners are now flying off their virtual shelves as fast as these kids can get them in.
Roughly 40,000 families are eligible for Habitat for Humanity homes in the gulf as a result of the 2005 hurricanes. At $75,000 a home, it will take 3 billion dollars to fill the order.
Tiron is not intimidated by the scope of the need. He takes pride in every stride that he, his sister, and their task force have been able to achieve. He’s looking forward to joining the other kids on the task force to meet with CEO’s of multibillion dollar corporations in early 2007 to plan their partnership strategy for the year. Looking back on what they have accomplished so far, and the plans they have in the works, Tiron reflects, "I feel like a hero."
Slidell's Mayor Ben Morris thinks he's a hero. Mayor Morris surprised Tiron and Tonisha at their event by proclaiming it "Tiron and Tonisha Day!"
Over the 2006 holiday season, roughly 99,000 families across the gulf were living in FEMA trailers as a result of the 2005 hurricanes. While most kids were thinking about what they’d like to receive for Christmas-- making up lists and checking them twice. Tonisha, Tiron, and the task force of children from across the nation were thinking about what they’d like to give for Christmas—making up plans and checking their order forms.
