Operation Hydration Station

We are hoping that by selling these anti-bottles, we can eliminate single-use water bottles from our builing. We will use the proceeds from these bottles to purchase not only the bottle filling spigots for our school, but also to restore our outdoor courtyard. If the bottles are a hit, we hope that other schools in our district will join our efforts. These VAPUR water bottles are BPA-free, dishwasher safe, come in many different colors, can be rolled up to be stored in your pocket, schoolbag, or purse, and have a carabiner attached to them so you can clip them anywhere youd like. There is a place on the back to write your name with a permanent marker, so they are easily identifiable as well. They also come with a special bookmark unique to ISD 197s LiveGreen initiatives. Feel free to share this with your friends and family. The bottles will be for sale in the school store at Heritage Middle School for $10.00. If you already have a reusable water bottle but would like to help our cause, there is a place on our website where you can donate money instead. Thanks for your support!

Poplar Bridge Raingarden

Poplar Bridge is partnering with Nine Mile Creek Watershed District in order to establish a rain garden as an outdoor learning space for our students. It will be working in collaboration with an already established courtyard that houses important learning tools such as a pond, rain barrel, and natural vegetation. These spaces will be used to make our curriculum both local and relevant and give direct opportunities for students to observe their natural surroundings. Students will be involved in the entire process of creating a raingarden. In our pre-determined space, students will be doing percolation tests to see how rapidly or slowly water will soak into the soil. With that information, they will determine the depth and size of the garden. We will be using, “The Blue Thumb Guide to Raingardens” to aid us in determining the type of plants and are currently considering a bird and butterfly garden to attract our winged friends. We also hope to plan the garden so a majority of blooming will take place while school is in session. These VAPUR water bottles are BPA-free, dishwasher safe, come in many different colors, can be rolled up to be stored in your pocket, schoolbag, or purse, and have a carabiner attached to them so you can clip them anywhere you’d like. There is a place on the back to write your name with a permanent marker, so they are easily identifiable as well. The bottles will be for sale at our Back to School Celebration and in the school store at Poplar Bridge Elementary for $10.00. Potters for Peace

The students in Miss. Carr's third-grade class at Montlieu Elementary have been learning about their environment and the important role water plays in our communities. On April 27th the elementary students will be joined by Welborn Middle and Andrews High on their local greenway as part of a community event. Greenway Day features a variety of scientific activities hosted by UNC-Greensboro's GK-12 program, funded by the National Science Foundation. During the day the class will offer the bottles as both a sustainable alternative to disposable containers and as a fundraising method for Potters for Peace. Potters for Peace is a US-based non-profit that works in two clay-related fields: working with subsistence potters in Central America and working throughout the world to assist with the establishment of factories that produce ceramic water filters. more

Project:127

In James 1:27, we are called to "look after orphans and widows in their distress". This project is doing exactly that. We feel we are compelled to leave a legacy in a world that seems to only care about oneself . We emphasis that in 20 years, no one will remember the shirt you wore, or that pimple you had right smack-down in the center of your nose. What they will remember however, is the words that you said, and the way that you loved others. Project:127 is challenging you to be apart of something bigger then yourself. We ask you join hands with us as we save lives by providing education for those less-fortunate. more

reading is light

My name is Nigel Sumbuk. I am from PNG (Papua New Guinea). My country has a population of about 7million people. Most people in PNG live in villages. I would say about 80%. In this 80% about 80% cannot or do not have access to schools. This means they cannot read properly or do not read at all. My mum and sister are helping me with this project. We would like you to donate funds, which we think is the easiest. This will assist us to buy books and pay for the transport cost here in PNG for designated schools. We will also assist The Voice Inc www.thevoicepng.org on one of their book drive activity. I am sure it would be fun for me but I would also like to assist children like me who have limited access to books Please donate NIGEL SUMBUK more

Rehabilitating Street Children back to Class

Recently, efforts have been made in Kenya to promote education as the key to helping children overcome poverty, improve their lives and change their communities. This however has proved difficult to have as many children in schools as majority because of poverty stays out of school. The problem of rapid urbanization in Kenya has had profound negative effects, especially with regard to its effects on children and families. People have been struggling disproportionately with the ill effects of growing urbanization, economic instability, pandemic outbreaks of disease, and dire poverty. This project intends to provide access to reading materials to children from poor families in the slums who because of lack of text book perform poorly in their national examinations and thus make them to drop out of school. The project entail putting up library facilities in public and community schools to allow access to as many children to access reading materials and reading space. more
