Introducing Mary Sun of NextGEN Policy

Mary Sun Senior, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (Alexandria, VA)

Concerned with science and technology policy issues and the lack of youth awareness about them, Mary founded NextGEN Policy in 2010. Many of the organization's campaigns originated from her research on undercovered medical, social, and humanitarian issues. Mary is deeply interested in epidemiology and global health, focusing on the intersection between public policy and research and development in her work with NextGEN. Currently, she is a biomedical research intern at the National Institutes of Health and enjoys writing, varsity swimming, and working with youth.

What you can experience through this

NextGEN involves students in political campaigns, election tracking, student lobbying, and presentations to Congressional representatives in order to educate our businesses and legislators about current science legislation. We also draw on our communities, hosting seminars and workshops for workers in the medicine, health, and engineering fields to increase their levels of civic engagement and to encourage them to hold political office. To encourage youth advocacy, we sponsor worthy student initiatives and give seminars on political participation for youth. Through our organization, we hope to ensure that smart, informed decisions are made about deeply impactful issues that span the spectrum of public health.
