The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. In support of this vision, we at Northwoods Park Middle School are going to be selling environmentally friendly water bottles to benefit children on 3 continents. This project will bring safe drinking water to over 600 students at 5 Primary and Middle Schools in Guatemala, Tanzania, and India. Unfortunately, for every six water bottles we use, only one makes it to the recycling bin. The rest are sent to landfills. Or, even worse, they end up as trash on the land and in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate. Nearly one billion people lack access to safe water and 2.5 billion do not have improved sanitation. The health and economic impacts are staggering. It is our hope that by selling these anti-bottles, we can raise awareness and eliminate single use water bottles from our campus and community.
