We distribute solar lanterns to Kenyan schools. Our lanterns replace kerosene lamps, which are more costly, produce fumes that cause pneumonia, bronchitis, and lung cancer in the students and their families, and release carbon dioxide that contributes to global warming. Since solar energy is fr... moreWe distribute solar lanterns to Kenyan schools. Our lanterns replace kerosene lamps, which are more costly, produce fumes that cause pneumonia, bronchitis, and lung cancer in the students and their families, and release carbon dioxide that contributes to global warming. Since solar energy is free, families will save money they otherwise would pay for kerosene. They can use the extra money for food, school fees, or other things they need. A portion of kerosene savings will be used to set up a purchase lanterns for the next incoming grade of students, year after year. We are working to improve the literacy and health of students in Africa while simultaneously helping curb global warming through eliminating carbon emissions (over 1 ton for every lantern every year) in a self-perpetuating system.

You ll get to meet and spend time with other people that care about a lot of the same things you do: helping kids get an education, helping whole families be more healthy, and helping our planet If you join me, you can make a substantial difference in someone s life! Some days it feels like the day-to-day things we do may not be all that important. Imagine how you would feel if you knew that you personally stopped a ton of carbon dioxide from entering the environment-- or 10 tons, or 100! Imagine how you would feel knowing you helped a child, a class, or a whole school be able to do their homework and learn to read! Imagine how you would feel knowing you helped a whole family able to cook, read, and work after dark. Imagine how you would feel knowing that a child, or a whole school full of children, was no longer endangered by the risk of kerosene burns or respiratory diseases-- because of YOU. Pretty awesome.

Whatever you do, connect it to literacy and books: Host a story hour for younger kids, have a readathon at elementary schools --great successes, simple and rewarding, try a poster/poem/essay contest with an entry fee and prizes donated by local businesses, or consider a NIGHT read by lantern.
