WATER CONTAINER DONATION

Lack of safe water and sanitation is the world’s single largest cause of illness. One in six people have no access to safe water. The toll on children is especially high. About 4,500 children die each day from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation facilities. Countless others suffer from poor health, diminished productivity and missed opportunities for education. The young and the old are particularly vulnerable. Over 90 per cent of deaths from diarrhoeal diseases due to unsafe water and sanitation in the developing world occur in children below 5 years old. Giving clean water to a poverty stricken community is like giving a blood transfusion to a dying man. Clean water and latrines gives people the opportunity and the dignity to lead healthy lives, pursue education, and fulfill their lives to the fullest. This leads to new potential, new hope for a better tomorrow and a new life. Simply put - the lack of safe drinking water is the primary cause of disease in the world today. Everyday, tens of thousands of people die from causes directly related to contaminated water. And for those who survive, without good health, there is little chance for a normal and productive life. A surprising statistic to many is that contaminated water causes 80% of the health problems throughout the world. Much of the reason is because in rural areas of developing countries, the only water source for people to wash with and drink from is often a badly polluted shallow well (less than 10 feet deep) or mud-hole used by both animals and humans. In those areas where there’s actually a stream or river, they’re often polluted as well, because animal and human wastes are emptied directly into it without proper treatment.African actor Majid Michel wants to help donate the containers to rural communities and NGO's through his foundation (MajiWoc Foundation) based in Ghana. more

Wipe up Sandy's Mess

I am planning to raise money through Architecture for Humanity so I can provide them the resources to build the homes. Each house will cost at least $10,000 to rebuild (not including household items) with the FEMA insurance provided to the families of the East Coast. I want to sell toilet paper (yes toilet paper!) to the public so the money can go to benefit the cause. About 90% of the money will go to building houses for the families of Hurricane Sandy. Thanks for your support! Our slogan is: Wipe up Sandy's Mess! more

Women LEAD

Our programs empower young women to be leaders by providing them with leadership training, skills-building, mentoring, and a peer-support network. The intensive 12 month LEAD program launches with a two-week Leadership Institute where students gain knowledge on issues such as women’s rights and acquire professional skills such as public speaking. They learn from and engage with Nepali female leaders who come in as guest speakers. They learn leadership theory and practice through seminars, workshops and political and service learning trips. Throughout the academic year, participants are paired with a mentor, stay engaged though social media, and continue building their skills and self-awareness through experiential learning in 1 of 3 programs: 1) Internships: Students intern with NGOs to build professional skills and gain experience. 2) Social Entrepreneurship: Students design and lead their own social venture in teams of 4-5, receiving training, guidance and $250 to launch a project in response to a community need. One team is currently working on a recycling project. 3) School LEADership: Students are trained to facilitate weekly leadership workshops for 30 middle school students in their own schools. 10 students are currently facilitating workshops for 130 middle-school students (girls and boys) about issues affecting their lives, such as bullying, parental pressure, and relationships. more

Write On!

If you chose to join Write On! you don't have to leave your house. In fact, all you have to do, is send a journal to someone. Not just a kid or an adult. It could be a criminal on death row, or a kid dying in the hospital. I am open to suggestions...but I have many ideas such as: writing inspirational notes in the journals, creating a website where people can post short stories, this could be amazing or a failure. I'm flexible, so this is your chance to put your own ideas into actions. I believe writing can change lives....let's make it happen! more
