Operation Hydration Station

We are hoping that by selling these anti-bottles, we can eliminate single-use water bottles from our builing. We will use the proceeds from these bottles to purchase not only the bottle filling spigots for our school, but also to restore our outdoor courtyard. If the bottles are a hit, we hope that other schools in our district will join our efforts. These VAPUR water bottles are BPA-free, dishwasher safe, come in many different colors, can be rolled up to be stored in your pocket, schoolbag, or purse, and have a carabiner attached to them so you can clip them anywhere youd like. There is a place on the back to write your name with a permanent marker, so they are easily identifiable as well. They also come with a special bookmark unique to ISD 197s LiveGreen initiatives. Feel free to share this with your friends and family. The bottles will be for sale in the school store at Heritage Middle School for $10.00. If you already have a reusable water bottle but would like to help our cause, there is a place on our website where you can donate money instead. Thanks for your support!

Poplar Bridge Raingarden

Poplar Bridge is partnering with Nine Mile Creek Watershed District in order to establish a rain garden as an outdoor learning space for our students. It will be working in collaboration with an already established courtyard that houses important learning tools such as a pond, rain barrel, and natural vegetation. These spaces will be used to make our curriculum both local and relevant and give direct opportunities for students to observe their natural surroundings. Students will be involved in the entire process of creating a raingarden. In our pre-determined space, students will be doing percolation tests to see how rapidly or slowly water will soak into the soil. With that information, they will determine the depth and size of the garden. We will be using, “The Blue Thumb Guide to Raingardens” to aid us in determining the type of plants and are currently considering a bird and butterfly garden to attract our winged friends. We also hope to plan the garden so a majority of blooming will take place while school is in session. These VAPUR water bottles are BPA-free, dishwasher safe, come in many different colors, can be rolled up to be stored in your pocket, schoolbag, or purse, and have a carabiner attached to them so you can clip them anywhere you’d like. There is a place on the back to write your name with a permanent marker, so they are easily identifiable as well. The bottles will be for sale at our Back to School Celebration and in the school store at Poplar Bridge Elementary for $10.00. If you already have a reusable water bottle but would like to help our cause, there is a place on our website where you can donate money instead. Thanks for your support!

Potters for Peace

The students in Miss. Carr's third-grade class at Montlieu Elementary have been learning about their environment and the important role water plays in our communities. On April 27th the elementary students will be joined by Welborn Middle and Andrews High on their local greenway as part of a community event. Greenway Day features a variety of scientific activities hosted by UNC-Greensboro's GK-12 program, funded by the National Science Foundation. During the day the class will offer the bottles as both a sustainable alternative to disposable containers and as a fundraising method for Potters for Peace. Potters for Peace is a US-based non-profit that works in two clay-related fields: working with subsistence potters in Central America and working throughout the world to assist with the establishment of factories that produce ceramic water filters. more

Saving Trees A Pencil At A Time

Our mission is to save trees, one pencil at a time. Many trees are cut down a year, as much as Twenty Million, and with only about 500 million trees left. So this means in about 250 years there will be no trees left and trees are a main part of oxygen on the earth, and with no oxygen theres no breathing. With the averge person using about 75-125 pencils a year id say its time to get some new way to make pencils thats where smencils come in they are pencils made out of newspaper that come in scents that makes writing much more exciting for kids, we can save the earth one tree at a time. :) more

SOO....Save Our Oceans

Save Our Oceans Project The students developing this project attend The Foundation Academy and are currently working on the TFA sponsored Jacksonville Science Festival. The Science Festival is a yearly event that the students produce in their PIBL (Project Inquiry Based Learning) class, which incorporates language arts, social studies, visual and performing arts, along with science. The event is completely non-profit and is meant to educate the community through student initiative. It lasts three days and there’s no cost to attend. The students cover many facets of science every year with projects on mechanical science, psychological science, and of course, marine science, just to name a few. This year in particular the festival will be held at the FSCJ south campus for two days and at the Museum of Science and History in downtown Jacksonville for the final day. There you can vote for your favorite booth (the winning group gets a cash prize). The students involved with the festival also have opportunities to earn scholarships through their hard work on their projects for the festival. The festival is entertaining for all ages, with many of the booths featuring hands-on interactive elements, which are completely designed by the students. In fact, unlike most science festivals, the students, rather than adults, are the experts. SOO -- the Save Our Oceans project -- is a class effort. Students research various organisms such as Sea Turtles, Great White Sharks, Polar Bears, and Right Whales, and the threats they face. The purpose of the Anti-Bottle campaign is to raise awareness of threats caused by carbon-based products and the masses of trash in our oceans. more
