SOO....Save Our Oceans

Save Our Oceans Project The students developing this project attend The Foundation Academy and are currently working on the TFA sponsored Jacksonville Science Festival. The Science Festival is a yearly event that the students produce in their PIBL (Project Inquiry Based Learning) class, which incorporates language arts, social studies, visual and performing arts, along with science. The event is completely non-profit and is meant to educate the community through student initiative. It lasts three days and there’s no cost to attend. The students cover many facets of science every year with projects on mechanical science, psychological science, and of course, marine science, just to name a few. This year in particular the festival will be held at the FSCJ south campus for two days and at the Museum of Science and History in downtown Jacksonville for the final day. There you can vote for your favorite booth (the winning group gets a cash prize). The students involved with the festival also have opportunities to earn scholarships through their hard work on their projects for the festival. The festival is entertaining for all ages, with many of the booths featuring hands-on interactive elements, which are completely designed by the students. In fact, unlike most science festivals, the students, rather than adults, are the experts. SOO -- the Save Our Oceans project -- is a class effort. Students research various organisms such as Sea Turtles, Great White Sharks, Polar Bears, and Right Whales, and the threats they face. The purpose of the Anti-Bottle campaign is to raise awareness of threats caused by carbon-based products and the masses of trash in our oceans. more

Success is Contagious (SIC)

What have we done so far? Our first program began in the December 2009 at Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics High School. In the past year and a half, Mohammed and Syed have actively worked with a group of sophomore students. This group was to be our experimental group for the program, in order to record results and flaws in the model of the program. The experimental group consisted of 25 students, of which 5 decided to drop out of the program. The 20 students who decided to remain have not only improved academically, with each student increasing by an average of 15 points on their GPAs, but also socially. The students are now active participants in clubs and organizations in and around the school. Furthermore, many of our students hold leadership positions in their respective clubs and organization. (Data will be presented should you be interested in our program). How do we do it? Our program is very simple to run. All we ask for from our sponsor school is a room afterschool and permission to borrow textbooks for the hours we are in session. We work closely with the guidance department to find a group of students who are failing classes and are in need of help. We then speak to each student and find out their weak points and what they need to improve on. An entrance application must be submitted for this program. Once we find our students, we begin our sessions. Our model is two-pronged. We use one day of the week to focus on academics and tutoring. The second day is used for skills and habits workshops (leadership training). We find the tutors and we deal with the compensation, therefore we take another burden off the school. What we are now working on is finding space on Saturdays and running daylong workshops and classes for our students. By doing so, we expect our data and statistics to improve even more than they already have. Who do we work with? Some of the many organizations we work closely with are: Children’s Aid Society (Our umbrella within schools), RandomKid (our 501c3 umbrella; the grantor under which we operate), Youth Venture (our seed grant sponsors), Do Something (consultation), Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (consultation/brother organization), iCivics, National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, Core Multimedia Group, and Start Some Good. UPDATE: The organization we work with, Children's Aid Society, will be leaving the school beginning Fall 2011 and therefore, Scholars for Success is interviewing for a full-time organization position within Manhattan Center High School. Wish us luck and show the support guys! more

Teach India

We are not collecting funds, We are collecting stuff like Books, Stationary and need Volunteers for this Project. Education is the best known reserve to Mankind. It can be harnessed by anyone and everyone. It helps in upliftment of an individual as well as the whole society. It is the only key to development in each and every sector. In India, we have 16 IITs spread over 15 Provinces. The Indian Institutes of Technology (Hindi: भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, IITs) are a group of autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institutes of higher education. The IITs are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as “Institutions of National Importance”, and lays down their powers, duties, framework for governance etc.[1] They were created to train scientists and engineers, with the aim of developing a skilled workforce to support the economic and social development of India. IITs are listed as societies under the Indian Societies Registration Act. We as the students of higher studies can unite to initiate a project to Educate Poor Children especially Girl Child, who don't afford schools or are made to work by their parents to earn for their living and support their families, across the respective regions free-of-cost or on marginal price in our daily spare time and counsel and prepare them for various competitive exams. Through PAN IIT, the common IIT council for all the 16 IITs, we can unite at a single place and can have discussions to the various problems faced through the implementation of the Project and get support by our distinguished Alumni. more
